August – The Rainy Season Continues
In August, the daytime average temps are gradually decreasing from the highest temperatures in July, they still stay in the mid to lower 90s with the night time temperatures hovering around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. August is still considered part of the rainy season in Las Cruces, but the precipitation in August rarely exceeds 2.5 inches for the month.
As a result, our pecan tree caretakers must continue to irrigate our thirst pecan trees which are growing fast. One of the biggest expenses of running an estate-owned pecan farm is the cost of providing water for the trees. Pecan trees require a lot of water to produce excellent crops of large pecans.
The work on the pecan farm in August is a continuation of the work going on in July. The crews continue mowing around the pecan trees, keeping weeds and other plants away from the bases of the trees so they do not sap any of the precious water from the pecan trees themselves.
Life at the pecan shelling plant continues – the processing of the previous year’s fresh pecan harvest is in full swing and our packagers continue shipping out cases of pecans to industrial and commercial markets–including rebaggers–all over the world.
