June – The Rainy Season Begins

While July is the hottest month of the growing season, the daytime average temps never dropping below the upper to mid-90’s, and the night time temperatures never dipping below 70, it is the beginning of the rainy season. Although the amount of rainfall during this month of the “rainy season” rarely goes above 2 inches of precipitation. So, we generously supplement our pecan orchards with additional irrigation.

So continuing irrigation is essential for the growth of this year’s pecan crop, which we continue to supplement with fertilizer and zinc spray. All dry fertilization has been completed and this is the only way that the trees are fertilized going forward through the remainder of the growing season.

July is where the hot weather sets in and the pecans grow quickly. In this respect, July is not a lot different than the other summer months. The crews continue preparing the grounds and areas around the pecan trees for the next harvest by keeping the areas around the trees mowed and clear of weeds and other encroaching plants.

Nothing changes significantly at the shelling plant. The cracking and processing of fresh pecans continues unabated as we continue shipping bulk pecans by the case for our commercial and industrial markets.
